Removal of vascular lesions (broken capillaries) through IPL photo rejuvenation

Treats problems like:

  • Flushed cheeks
  • Dilated and broken capillaries on cheeks
  • Superficial veins on the nose

The face has an extensive network of veins and tiny blood vessels called capillaries. Over time, as a result of different factors such as sun, hormones, medication or even just your skin type, many people suffer from broken capillaries and rosacea (“ red flushed cheeks”) that can cause them social embarrassment. Dehydrated, dry, sensitive and lighter skin types provide less protection against the elements and therefore, these skin types are most commonly affected. Broken capillaries are mostly around the nose, cheeks and chin but may be found on others areas of the face as well.

How can it be treated?

While the cause of broken capillaries can be a variety of issues, getting rid of them can be tedious.

For both men and women IPL photo rejuvenation can now successfully treat dilated blood vessels without injuring the surrounding healthy skin.

How does it work?

Using the AFT 540nm module, the IPL delivers high intensity computer controlled pulses of light that penetrate the skin and is absorbed by the problem areas,( the facial veins) without damaging surrounding healthy skin.

The heat energy causes coagulation of the hemoglobin in the veins, causing the blood vessels to close off. The skin is left with a more even skin colour and an overall smoother and more radiant appearance.

On what areas can the treatment be done?

Veins can be effectively treated with IPL on the face and chest (décolleté) areas.

How many treatments do I need?

Depending on the severity of your broken capillaries, you may need 3-5 treatments.

The duration of the procedure will depend on the size of the area to be treated, but it typically takes 15 to 20 minutes to treat the cheeks.

An interval of 3-4 weeks between treatments is recommended.

What to expect during treatment

A cold gel is applied to the area to be treated. The smooth surface of the IPL hand piece is gently applied to your skin and pulses of light are emitted. You may feel a slight sting, like the snapping of a rubber band.

Some patients describe the treatment as a series of slight pin pricks to the skin. It is normally tolerated well and can be described as slightly uncomfortable.

What to expect after treatment for vascular lesions

Some people may experience a burning sensation (like mild sunburn) or itching which may persist for up to 2 hours after treatment.

The desired effect when treating broken capillaries (vascular lesions) is initial darkening of the vessels due to blood coagulation. Redness and/or edema (swelling) may occur along the vessel within the first 2-24 hours of treatment. This indicates a stimulated immune reaction (without changes in the surrounding epidermis).

If you experience any discomfort immediately following treatment, cold packs or a wet cloth may be applied as needed for patient comfort. Keep the treated area moist with a soothing lotion (for e.g. a lotion with Aloe Vera)

Am I a good candidate?

You will not be suitable for treatment if you:

  • You have a dark skin colour (darker that Fitzpatrick sun tanned on the area to be treated, have used a sun bed within the last month, or have used a fake tan on the area to be treated in the last 2 weeks.
  • Are pregnant
  • You have had an epileptic seizure in the last 2 years.
  • There may be some other medical conditions that mean you cannot be treated. The laser therapist will discuss these with you at the consultation.
  • You have used isotretinoin ( Roacuttane/ Orratane) in the past 6 months.

What long term results can I expect?

Although people differ in their response to the treatment (how many treatments etc.) the results are usually long- term and with proper sun protection (SPF 50+) and protections against the other factors as far as possible, the results can persist for many years. The effect of the IPL skin rejuvenation will be evident already after the first treatment, but will continue to improve over the next few months.
